Pattern recognition matters. Especially when political movements begin targeting Jews.
During my recent visit to Budapest’s House of Terror Museum, I walked through a building where people were imprisoned, interrogated, tortured, and murdered under two brutal authoritarian regimes.
First came Hungary’s fascist Arrow Cross Party, a fiercely nationalist, anti-capitalist, anti-communist movement driven by militant antisemitism. It later allied with Nazi Germany and Hitler’s National Socialist regime, and the Arrow Cross participated in the persecution and murder of Hungarian Jews.
Later, the Soviet-backed Hungarian communist secret police occupied this same building, using imprisonment, torture, and political terror to enforce ideological conformity under Stalinist rule.
Fascist, Nazi, National Socialist, and Communist movements had distinct ideological foundations, yet their authoritarian regimes demonstrated how political extremism, dehumanization, and enforced conformity could lead to persecution and mass violence.
As a Jew, a grandchild of Holocaust survivors and heroes, and someone who has spent my life studying Jewish and world history, I understand that recognizing dangerous sociopolitical patterns is not simply an academic exercise. It is deeply personal.
My grandparents survived a world in which anti-Jewish hatred became government policy. So much of my family did not.
That history informs my work in journalism, public diplomacy, political analysis, and advocacy. It shapes how I examine contemporary political movements, particularly when Jews, Zionists, and Israelis become targets of demonization and dehumanization.
We must recognize the warning signs before hatred becomes normalized, ideological conformity becomes compulsory, and persecution becomes institutionalized.
Judge political movements not merely by their stated ideals, but by their actions, whom they target, whose voices they silence, and whose humanity they deny.
When hatred becomes virtue, persecution becomes policy.
History doesn’t always repeat itself exactly. But its patterns are worth recognizing.
What warning signs should we be paying closer attention to in today’s political movements?
