Just got off a flight from Greece, and even before the plane’s wheels touched down in Israel… I felt it. Like a literal weight lifted off my chest. Greece was beautiful on the outside, but spiritually it felt heavy, oppressive, tense. Israel? The second I saw the coastline, even before landing, there was a holiness, a rest, a freedom in the air that I can’t explain in words. It’s real. You feel it in the streets, in the breeze, in the people. Then someone reminded me of the deepest reason why: The Hebrew word for Zion (ציון) starts with the letter צ (tzadi), which represents holy restraint, the ability to say “no” to the body’s impulses so the soul can lead. Take that tzadi away and the word becomes יוון — Yavan, Greece. Greece represents the opposite philosophy: total surrender to desire, to the body, to “do whatever feels good.” That’s why the ancient Greeks tried to wipe out everything Jewish. It wasn’t just politics. It was a cosmic clash between holiness-through-restraint and slavery-to-instant-gratification. And guess what today’s version of Hellenism is called? Wokeism. Same spirit, new packaging: • Multiple gods → multiple truths • Worship of the body → worship of identity and desire • “If it feels good, do it” → “Your truth is the only truth” The battle the Maccabees fought 2,200 years ago is the exact same battle happening right now. Only this time the Greek temples aren’t in Athens — they’re in university campuses, social media algorithms, and international organizations. Israel still carries the tzadi. Still carries the mission of showing the world that real freedom isn’t doing whatever you want… It’s mastering yourself so you can serve something eternal. That’s why the air here feels different. That’s why, even in the middle of missiles and chaos, there’s a rest here you won’t find anywhere else. Because this is still Zion. And the tzadi is coming back stronger than ever. Chanukah sameach — may we all choose light over darkness
