Transcript [00:00] All right, folks. See Flea here in the [00:02] beautiful land of Judea. It's just [00:05] gorgeous out here. And you know what? [00:06] It's been gorgeous for thousands of [00:08] years, including when the Romans were [00:10] here 2,000 years ago. Now, the Jewish [00:13] people wanted independence from the [00:15] Romans. So, we had a great revolt. We [00:17] fought against the Romans. We lost. They [00:19] destroyed our temple. Taking on the [00:20] Romans, not a good idea. They were like [00:22] the biggest army ever. Um, but we took [00:26] them on. We fought them with pride, but [00:28] we lost. The amazing thing about the [00:30] Jewish people is that we revolted once [00:32] again only 60 years later. That's called [00:34] the Barba revolt. The Barba revolt gives [00:37] us strength to this very day. We still [00:39] think about it because the Barba revolt [00:42] was a real show that Jewish people are [00:44] still alive, still burning, still [00:46] fighting for independence. And we took [00:48] their coins, we reminted them, we said [00:50] for the freedom of Zion. We found those [00:52] coins and we love them. They give us [00:54] independence and strength. to this very [00:57] day. We right now here in the land of [00:58] Israel are in our third commonwealth. [01:01] Third commonwealth. We had a first [01:02] temple period, a second temple period [01:04] and now we're in the third temple [01:06] period, the third commonwealth. We're [01:07] not a Johnny come lately 1948 born [01:10] country. Not at all. We're not a [01:12] post-holocaust un-orn country. We're an [01:14] ancient people on this land. We are an [01:16] indigenous people on this land. And so [01:18] we are back now and back strong. The [01:21] following video from the folks at [01:22] Megalim is all about the Barcobar [01:25] revolt. Learn about how the Jewish [01:28] people fought against the Romans for a [01:30] second time uh in the period of that [01:33] great leader. The other thing you're [01:34] going to learn about is what the word [01:35] Messiah means. The word Messiah [01:37] Messiah, the anointed one, means a [01:39] leader, a leader who fights the enemies [01:41] of Israel, who wants Israel to be big [01:43] who wants the Jewish people to repent [01:45] and return to God and build that temple. [01:47] All right, so let's check out this [01:49] amazing video from the folks at Megalim. [01:52] Very educational, very fun about the [01:54] Barbar Revolt. And let's get inspired [01:56] together. [01:59] What infuriated him so much that almost [02:01] 2,000 years ago, he marched half the [02:03] Roman army into the small province of [02:05] Judea under his most esteemed officers [02:09] with one mission. Search, destroy, and [02:14] burn. [02:16] Perhaps Barba. [02:23] 60 years had passed since the Romans [02:25] destroyed Jerusalem in the temple. [02:28] Grieving and in pain, the Jews anxiously [02:31] awaited the opportunity to rebuild the [02:33] city. [02:35] Then in 130 CE, the Roman Emperor [02:39] Hadrien visited Jerusalem to rebuild the [02:42] city from its ruins. [02:44] The Jews were thrilled [02:48] until they realized that Hadrien had not [02:50] come to rebuild Jerusalem. [02:53] He had come to bury it and to build on [02:56] its ruins a pagan Roman city. [02:59] On the 9th of A, the Roman governor held [03:01] the plowing ceremony that marked the [03:04] establishment of a new Roman colony. [03:08] Hadrien's decision to build a temple to [03:10] Jupiter, precisely where the temple [03:12] stood, caused tremendous turmoil among [03:15] the Jews. [03:18] The humiliation was unbearable. [03:22] Tens of thousands took up arms to defend [03:24] Jerusalem with their lives. Their [03:26] charismatic leader would be remembered [03:28] as one of the fiercest characters in [03:30] Jewish history, [music] [03:33] Shimon Barba. [03:37] To the people of Judea, Bakba was a [03:39] superhero. [03:42] They said he would catch catapult stones [03:44] in mid-flight and kick them back at the [03:47] Romans heads. His soldiers would [03:49] supposedly uproot a tree while riding a [03:52] galloping horse. [03:54] But although he became a legend, the [03:57] details of his life remained [music] [03:58] obscure, even his real name was unknown [04:02] until 1952 [music] when the [04:05] archaeologist Yaelia Dean found [04:06] [clears throat], caves, in, the, Judeian [04:08] desert to which the last of the rebels [04:10] had fled. Numerous objects were [04:12] discovered in the caves, among [music] [04:14] them, a bundle of letters from 1,800 [04:17] years ago. [04:19] I sat trembling at my desk in Jerusalem [04:22] as I gazed at the bundle of ancient [04:24] papirai in my hand. [04:27] Carefully I extracted two [music] of [04:28] them from the bundle. [04:30] I could not believe my eyes. [04:34] Shimon Kosima Nasi, ruler over Israel. [05:02] Civilians were also required to provide [05:04] food and [music] supplies. Barovba had [05:06] no patience for people who refused to do [05:08] their part. [05:10] You are living [music] well, eating and [05:12] drinking off the property of the house [05:14] of Israel, and care nothing about your [05:16] brethren. [05:17] A rough, tough hero, sometimes even [05:20] violent. But Barakba was perceived by [05:23] many as the only man who could save the [05:25] Jewish people in these dire times. [05:28] Rabbi Yakima, one of the greatest sages [05:30] of the generation, even proclaimed him [05:32] the Messiah. [05:35] Not everyone agreed that Bararkman was [05:37] the savior the Jews had been waiting [05:38] for. But the nation joined in the [05:41] uprising with enthusiasm. Symbols of the [05:43] revolt were imprinted on thousands [05:45] [music] of coins. The fight for the [05:46] redemption of Jerusalem under Shimon [05:48] Baropa was underway. [05:54] Under the Romans noses, the Jews started [05:56] [music] making weapons. [05:59] According to the Roman historian [music] [06:01] Casius Dio, the Jews dug escape tunnels [06:03] and attack tunnels underground like this [06:06] one. [06:08] The fighters emerged from these tunnels [06:10] attacked the Roman troops by surprise [06:11] and then retreated back into the depths [06:13] of the earth. [06:16] The Roman troops [music] were helpless [06:17] in the face of this new tactic. [06:20] Even if a Roman soldier could locate the [06:22] opening to a secret tunnel, he would [06:24] have to remove his armor, leave his [06:26] shield, bow, and spear outside and crawl [06:29] in with just his sword. [06:32] Inside the tunnel, Bakoka's troops would [06:34] be waiting silently with drawn daggers [06:36] or a heavy rock ready to smash in his [06:39] head. Hundreds of such tunnels were dug [06:42] all over the country. The tactic took [06:44] the Roman army by surprise and managed [06:46] to undermine its control of the region. [06:48] Word of the success spread, fermenting [06:51] unrest throughout the empire. [06:54] The Jews everywhere gathered and began [06:56] to rise up against the Romans. Many [06:58] outside nations too [music] were joining [06:59] them and the whole earth, one might [07:01] almost say, was in commotion over the [07:03] matter. Somewhat belatedly, Hadrien [07:06] realized that Barakqua was more of a [07:07] threat than he had thought and that if [07:09] he didn't put [music] down the uprising [07:10] quickly, things would get out of [07:12] control. [07:14] The solution was to bring Julius [07:16] Civerus, the most celebrated officer in [07:18] the Roman army, from Britain, and put a [07:20] huge army at his disposal. Tens of [07:23] thousands of troops were brought from [07:24] Egypt, Syria, Trans Jordan, Bulgaria [07:27] Hungary, and Italy itself. [07:30] But the Jews didn't give up. Men, women [07:32] and children from [music] the [07:33] surrounding villages grabbed makeshift [07:35] weapons, whatever they could find, and [07:37] bravely attacked the Roman soldiers. [07:41] The result was devastating. [07:44] Tens of thousands were killed. So many [07:46] Romans were killed in battle that entire [07:48] units were wiped out. The severity of [07:51] the situation was expressed [music] by [07:53] Hadrien in a letter to the Senate in [07:54] Rome. When reporting on the fighting in [07:57] Judea, he was forced to omit the [07:59] standard opening [music] phrase, "If you [08:00] and your children are in good health, it [08:02] is well. I and the legions are in good [08:04] health." [08:06] Adrien and his [music] troops were not [08:08] in good health. Despite the heavy [08:10] losses, the Roman war machine was [08:12] unrelenting. [08:14] Soldiers surrounded the tunnels, set [08:16] fires at their entrances, and then [08:18] killed every last fighter. One by one [08:22] the few surviving fighters fled to caves [08:24] in the Judean desert, bringing with them [08:26] [music] their most precious possessions [08:29] personal documents, valuable bronze [08:32] [snorts] items, talitent to fillin, and [08:35] keys to the homes they had left behind. [08:38] But even here, the long arm of the [08:40] Romans caught up with them. [08:48] The uprising was crushed. Close to a [08:51] thousand villages were burned down. And [08:52] on the 9th of A in the year 135 CE [08:55] Betar, the last stronghold fell [08:59] along with the hero on whom the people [09:01] had hung so many hopes [09:03] Baka. [09:05] The bloodbath perpetrated by Hadrien was [09:08] unprecedented in the Roman Empire. [09:11] They killed men, women, and children [09:13] until their blood poured [music] out [09:15] through the doorways and the passages [09:17] and the horses were submerged in blood [09:19] up to their noses. [09:22] More than half a million Jews were [09:24] slaughtered. The survivors [music] were [09:25] sold into slavery, often for blood [09:27] sport, entertainment, or prostitution. [09:31] There were so many of them that the [09:33] price of a Jewish slave dropped to that [09:35] of a portion of horsefeed. [09:38] Hrien celebrated his victory and [09:40] commemorated it with a huge monument [09:42] whose ruins were found at Tel Shalm in [09:44] the Betchan Valley. [09:46] Near these ruins, a bronze statue of the [09:48] emperor was discovered. It is now on [09:51] display in the Israel Museum. On the [09:53] emperor's armor, we see Roman soldiers [09:55] brutally [music] trampling their [09:56] enemies. [09:59] But for Hadrien, that was not enough. [10:01] Humiliated by the casualties among his [10:02] troops and convinced that the Jewish [10:04] faith was the driving force behind the [10:06] uprising, he declared a war of [10:07] annihilation against Judaism itself [10:10] circumcision, Sabbath observance, Torah [10:12] study, chauffar blowing, and the eating [10:13] of matzah on Passover. All the [10:15] commandments that made the Jewish [10:17] [music] people unique and gave meaning [10:18] and identity to their lives were banned [10:20] and anyone who observed [music] them was [10:22] cruy executed. [10:24] Many Jews refused to obey the decrees [10:26] and preferred to die rather than give up [10:28] their faith. Among them was Rabbi Aka. [10:33] The consequences of the uprising were [10:34] catastrophic for the Jewish people. [10:36] Judea was completely destroyed and half [10:38] its population was killed. Many [10:41] survivors fled to the Galile to seek [10:43] refuge among their [music] Jewish [10:44] brethren there. Jerusalem, the reason [10:46] for the uprising was wiped out [10:48] completely. And a pagan Roman city [10:50] Ailia Capolina, was built on its ruins. [10:55] On Hadrien's orders, the Jews were [10:56] barred from living within sight of the [10:58] city for which they had given their [10:59] lives. It was a crushing, unequivocal [11:02] victory, [11:04] and it appeared as though Jerusalem [11:06] would be forgotten, like other capitals [11:08] conquered by the Roman Empire. But [11:10] history tells us a different story. [11:19] The [music] Jews devotion to Jerusalem [11:21] never waned. Many years after the [11:24] glorious Roman Empire ceased to exist [11:26] and the statues of its emperors had been [11:28] moved to museums, Jerusalem once [music] [11:30] again became the center of the Jewish [11:32] world and the capital of Israel. [11:35] More Jews [music] live there today than [11:36] ever before in history. So, Hrien, you [11:40] managed to uproot the Jews from [11:41] Jerusalem, [11:43] but approving Jerusalem [music] from the [11:44] hearts of the Jews [11:47] that is apparently a different story. [11:50] >> All right,, folks., I, hope, you, enjoyed [11:52] that uh great film by the folks at [11:55] Megalim about the Barba revolt which was [11:59] after the second temple period. Uh we [12:01] fought back, we won, we held Jerusalem [12:03] for 3 years according to some [12:04] archaeologists. Others say no. But it [12:06] doesn't matter. There was victory there. [12:08] There was a fight and there was a sense [12:11] that the Jewish people can push back [12:13] even on great empires. And the Jewish [12:15] people are right now fighting all kinds [12:17] of empires and all kinds of haters. We [12:20] [music] have to know that we have the [12:21] strength inside of us. But that strength [12:23] comes from Hashem. Hashem, God Almighty [12:26] he gives us the strength to fight. And [12:28] he's given us the strength to return to [12:29] the land of Israel in what is now the [12:32] third commonwealth. And of course, we [12:34] have to say with the help of God and [12:36] Hashem, blessed is God. Those are simple [12:38] ways to give credit to Hashem for [12:40] bringing us back and effectuating the [12:43] most incredible of all miracles, which [12:45] is the in gathering of the exiles to the [12:47] land of Israel. All right, don't forget [12:49] to like, comment, subscribe, and also [12:53] check out our web store and become a [12:54] member. There's so many cool things that [12:56] you could do at Flyshore TV. Thank you [12:58] so much. Thank you so much, Hashem, for [12:59] letting us broadcast to you. Uh, and [13:01] don't forget that if you love what we're [13:03] doing, please support it uh by going to [13:05] buy me a coffee.com [13:08] and fight for Isisrael.org. [13:10] GfforIsrael.org. [13:12] That's it. Thanks so much to all of you [13:13] wherever you are and we're sending you [13:15] blessings from this good land that [13:18] Hashem has given us that we have fought [13:19] for that we still die for. But we're [13:22] proud of uh and it is our indelible land [13:25] and we are fiercely independent because [13:27] Hashem says we're a nation that dwells [13:29] alone. That does not mean that we hate [13:31] anybody else. That does not mean we're [13:32] xenophobic. It just means that we know [13:34] where our bread is buttered. We know [13:36] that Hashem has given us strength and [13:38] we're back here in the good land. God [13:39] bless you wherever you are. Lots of [13:41] love, lots of blessings and shalom.
