"If you are Hamas, you have to be laughing at how easily you can play the international and American news media." That’s Elliot Kaufman’s conclusion of how the war in Gaza was reported. A longtime member of The Wall Street Journal's editorial board, his new book is a collection of interviews with the top decision makers in Israel’s war room — including the Prime Minister. Kaufman knows better than most people how wrong the media got the first draft, and how the corrections never caught up. The day after October 7th, Students for Justice in Palestine sent its campus chapters a toolkit calling the massacre "a historic win for the Palestinian resistance." Ten days in, the blast at al-Ahli hospital was reported around the world as an Israeli strike. He points out that it was a Palestinian Islamic Jihad rocket, and it hit the hospital's parking lot. The story was corrected, but he says "that narrative stuck." His take is that today’s loudest criticism of Israel is a moral panic, and that panics end.
