Transcript [00:00] Did you know that Jesus was Jewish? You [00:03] might be asking, [music] "What does that [00:04] mean for your Christian faith?" Watch [00:06] today and discover how understanding the [00:09] Jewish roots of your faith and your [00:11] [music] connection to Israel and the [00:12] Jewish people can transform your life [00:15] and the way you read the Bible. Coming [00:17] up on Jewish Voice. [00:24] Shalom and welcome to Jewish Voice. I'm [00:27] Rabbi Jonathan Bernest and I'm joined [00:29] once again today by my co-host Scott [00:31] Vul. Well, Scott, I can't wait to hear [00:35] from our guest today. Shelby Saman is a [00:38] Messianic Jewish believer today because [00:41] she had a divine visitation from Yeshua. [00:44] She has an incredible story. [00:47] Yes. So many visitation stories we hear [00:51] are from Muslims in Egypt or Saudi [00:53] Arabia or from other distant parts of [00:56] the world, but this one comes to us [00:58] straight from Los Angeles. Welcome, [01:01] Shelby. It's so great to have you. [01:03] >> Thank you for having me. [01:04] >> Shelby, I've been with you since the [01:07] beginning and I'm so excited that you [01:09] finally agreed to do this. Before we [01:11] talk about your visitation, which is is [01:13] so incredible, I want you to tell us a [01:16] little bit about the your family [01:18] background life growing up, your [01:19] religious background. [01:21] >> Yeah. So, growing up, um I was actually [01:24] what I later learned the word is [01:26] interfaith. Um my mother, she was [01:29] Jewish. Um raised more, she raised us [01:32] more reformed, but her background I [01:34] guess would be a little bit more leaning [01:35] towards like a conservative Jewish [01:37] background. And so I knew about God [01:40] because of that. We had celebrated high [01:42] holidays. Our family always came for [01:44] Hanukkah parties. I mean, we had a very [01:47] Jewish influence. Um, my dad's side of [01:49] the family, he was raised like cradle [01:52] Lutheran. So, he was raised in the [01:53] church and really knew a lot about the [01:56] Bible. But in reality, in practice, our [01:59] Christian or Christian, I guess it's [02:01] Christian side of our life was much more [02:03] about the commercialism of the holidays. [02:05] you know, Santa at Christmas time, uh, [02:08] ham at an Easter meal. Um, so that was [02:11] kind of at least the the furthest extent [02:13] of my religious background. But [02:16] spiritually, I actually, as a child, I [02:18] grew up in Hawaii. And so in Hawaii, [02:21] there's a lot of different types of [02:23] spiritual influences. And so, you know, [02:25] I had actually been very influenced by [02:27] what I guess would be called like more [02:29] occultic style, like spiritual readings, [02:33] energy, movement, like work, that kind [02:36] of stuff. [02:36] >> What about Jesus? [02:38] >> Uh, honestly, I really did not know [02:40] anything really about Jesus growing up. [02:42] Despite the fact that my dad was [02:44] technically Christian, I didn't there [02:46] was no real understanding who Jesus was. [02:48] Organized religion was bad. You didn't [02:50] want to go. [02:50] >> Typical holiday Jew. [02:51] >> Holiday. Well, I'm super I'm like ready [02:54] to hear this story [02:57] >> because you know you hear of these [02:58] stories as we introduce you from you [03:00] know Muslims in the Middle East but to a [03:02] Jewish gal in Los Angeles. Tell us what [03:05] happened. Unheard of. [03:06] >> Unheard of. [03:07] >> Yeah. I mean honestly it still feels so [03:10] surreal in a way for me because I wasn't [03:12] seeking at the time. I wasn't like [03:14] trying to find any spiritual answers in [03:16] my life. I honestly I was not a great [03:19] part of my life. I was very depressed. I [03:22] had no passion or purpose or direction [03:25] and I was dealing with a bout of [03:27] depression and all kinds of stuff like [03:28] that. And you know it literally he came [03:31] to me in the night. I was asleep and he [03:33] woke me from my sleep and it was like a [03:36] overwhelming white light and a man [03:38] within it and I'm crying and it's this [03:43] incredible experience that when I [03:45] describe it I tell people it was like [03:47] >> I was terrified but like in the safest [03:50] moment of my life at the same exact time [03:52] like being on the edge of a mountain and [03:55] you're just being held by the warmest [03:57] embrace. like that was my experience and [04:00] he and I that's where he told me he said [04:03] you know I I am the truth I am God and [04:07] to be really [04:07] >> do you know who he was [04:08] >> no [04:09] >> not at all and if anything I actually [04:12] became very like skeptical after of like [04:16] what what was this experience and like I [04:19] I definitely because I had just an [04:22] outline of what Jesus was I was like [04:25] well no way it was that right and so [04:27] then I almost, you know, how like in a [04:29] Jewish way of thinking, you have to get [04:31] very logical and you're like, well, now [04:32] I've got to build my argument for why it [04:34] wasn't what I think it is. So, that's [04:36] when I started jumping into the Bible [04:38] because I was like, I'm going to find [04:39] out why this was not who I thought it [04:42] was going to be. And I definitely never [04:43] got to disproving that. [laughter] [04:45] >> Oh my god, I have so many more [04:46] questions. I know it. Thank God it led [04:48] you to a Messianic Jewish congregation [04:50] and you found heritage. But we're going [04:52] to come back and talk more about it in [04:53] just a second. My friends, Jewish people [04:57] are coming to faith in Messiah [05:00] supernaturally, miraculously. [05:03] And we want you to be involved in what [05:06] God is doing with the Jewish people. [05:08] Why? Because the Bible says that when [05:10] the Jewish people come back to their [05:12] Messiah, it will bring life from the [05:15] dead. And I know that you have a Jewish [05:16] friend, a co-orker, a neighbor. We have [05:19] a book uh that a dear friend of mine [05:20] wrote, Sid Roth. They thought for [05:22] themselves. It's testimonies, 10 amazing [05:25] testimonies of Jewish people like Shelby [05:28] that have come to faith, that have found [05:30] Jesus as their Messiah. And and I'm one [05:32] of the 10. I'm I'm in it. We want to [05:35] offer this to you absolutely free. [05:37] >> Uh you can you can uh log on to the [05:40] website and ask for the book. [06:12] Because Scott, the greatest blessing [06:14] that you can give a Jewish person, [06:16] right, Shelby, is the message of their [06:18] Messiah. So free uh Sidroth, they [06:20] thought for themselves, we'll get it out [06:22] to you right away. We'll be right back. [06:24] Today, you're hearing the powerful [06:26] testimony of someone whose search for [06:28] truth led to the discovery that Yeshua, [06:31] Jesus, the Messiah, [music] is exactly [06:34] who he claimed to be. [08:06] Of course, I want to reiterate again, [08:07] we're offering a free book, They Thought [08:09] for themselves, 10 testimonies, [08:11] including muah uh of Jewish people that [08:14] have come to faith. And we're offering [08:16] it for free because that's what we're [08:18] talking about today. We're talking with [08:19] Shelby Saman who was not searching [08:23] >> but Yeshua was searching you out. He [08:24] came to you [08:26] >> and revealed himself to you. Again, this [08:29] is typical of Muslims and and uh Arabs [08:32] in in in countries where their life [08:35] their lives are threatened and Jesus [08:37] shows up to them. [08:38] >> But this girl in LA [08:40] >> had a divine visitation from Jesus. Did [08:42] you know it was Jesus? [08:44] >> Not I wouldn't say I knew at the time. [08:47] No. And it took me a while to come to [08:49] understand that it was Yeshua. Um I [08:52] spent time in the Bible really [08:54] uncovering the truth that the the man [08:56] who had visited me was my Messiah. It [08:59] started with a light and then he was [09:01] within the light and it was above me [09:03] from when I was in my bed. It was [09:06] >> your eyes are open and you're seeing and [09:08] you're hearing and this is Oh my [09:09] goodness. Incredible. I've prayed for [09:10] this kind of thing. I'm jealous. I'm [09:12] about to [laughter] walk up and [09:13] [clears throat] said no I'm kid I'm [09:14] kidding. [09:15] >> Me too. What? What? Now you you meet [09:17] Jesus [09:18] >> and you realize you're a Jew. [09:21] >> Yes. [09:21] >> Ethnically that we've talked about that, [09:23] right? [09:24] >> But how has that affected your identity? [09:26] How you see yourself um as a Jewish [09:30] follower of Yeshua? [09:32] >> Take it from after you wake up [09:34] >> or if you did wake if you did sleep. [09:36] >> I No, there was not much sleeping after. [09:38] [laughter] [09:39] I was definitely up and immediately on [09:41] like a a deep dive of understanding what [09:44] had happened. And when I did finally, [09:46] you know, again, I I was telling you in [09:48] our break that um reading the book of [09:50] John was really what solidified to me [09:52] that the truth was my Messiah and that [09:54] was the man who I had met and who had [09:56] visited. [09:56] >> So you read John and said I met him. [09:58] >> Yeah, absolutely. 100%. And then I [10:00] literally [laughter] um at [10:02] >> I wanted to have her on the show. So I'm [10:04] sorry for interr [10:07] I really almost be I mean I would never [10:10] put myself on the level of like someone [10:11] who's done seminary or scholarship in [10:13] you know their faith but I became where [10:16] I could study as much as I could to [10:18] understand as much as I could because I [10:21] was kind of grappling and balancing with [10:23] the realities of like oh my gosh I'm a [10:26] Jewish person who just met Jesus like [10:28] what does that mean for me? [laughter] [10:30] Am I no longer Jewish? What does that [10:32] mean? And um I realized through study [10:36] and honestly a lot of your materials [10:38] those things were around in different [10:40] forms and I realized that my Messiah [10:43] didn't take me away from Judaism. He [10:45] fulfilled my Judaism. And um so I became [10:49] very much like at peace and [10:52] understanding. Again I was with the Lord [10:53] at that point. So a lot of peace and [10:55] understanding and discernment was was [10:57] very much um I was embracing all of it. [11:01] Um [11:01] >> I just want to be clear. Yeah. [11:03] >> Nobody shared the the gospel with you. [11:04] >> No. [11:05] >> You had not read the Bible. [11:06] >> I mean, I was on my own, but like I had [11:09] not before that I really had not other [11:11] than [11:12] >> No track, no what? Whatever. Jesus came [11:14] to you. Amazing. [11:16] >> Instantly a believer. You read the book [11:18] of John and said, "I'm there." Yeah. [11:19] >> Right. I've been born from above. [11:21] >> Yes. Absolutely. And actually, it was [11:24] kind of again, I navigated my way. I [11:27] wasn't seeking and I was on Facebook and [11:29] that's when heritage kind of popped up. [11:31] your uh congregation in Los Angeles and [11:34] they had that word interfaith in the ad [11:36] and I was like what is this word like I [11:38] had never heard of that in my life [11:40] before and then when I went on the [11:42] website and it was like interfaith is [11:44] people who had been raised with both you [11:46] know Christianity and Judaism and [11:49] there's a heritage to all of this and a [11:51] whole community it really it was a huge [11:53] impact on me and I was like I have to [11:55] find these people like I got to be able [11:57] to find that and funny enough it was [11:58] during co and I tried to find you And [12:01] then something happened because we [12:02] weren't allowed to be where we were [12:04] meeting at the time. [12:04] >> You came to a meeting and nobody was [12:05] there. [12:06] >> Nobody was there. Yeah. [laughter] [12:08] >> You're serving the Lord now. You're [12:09] training dogs. Passion. What have you [12:11] learned from being a dog trainer? [12:14] >> So many things. Honestly, God was what [12:16] called me to be a dog trainer. And I [12:18] remember being like, I'm leaving an [12:19] ordinary job to go work full-time with [12:21] dogs. Like it seemed a little bizarre at [12:24] the time, but it really has led my life [12:26] into so many blessings. And dog training [12:28] itself just reflects so many ways the [12:31] relationship that we have with God. The [12:33] the order and structure and how actually [12:36] that becomes so freeing for us and it [12:38] allows us to be versions of ourselves [12:41] that aren't crippled with depression, [12:42] anxiety. It's the very same thing for [12:44] dogs. They need that type of structure. [12:46] So, it's been really beautiful. [12:47] >> I love what you're doing. I love how [12:49] you've applied your faith and grown in [12:50] the Lord. [12:51] >> Keep up the great work, Shelby. And [12:53] Shel's not alone. There's so many Jewish [12:55] people that are finding their Messiah. [12:58] Most of them, unlike Shelby, who had a [13:00] divine visitation, are hearing the [13:03] gospel from Christians like you. About [13:07] 80% Yeah. [13:08] >> Uh or 90% are coming to the Lord because [13:11] Christians are taking the time to love [13:13] them enough to share their faith with [13:15] them. And they're responding. Jewish [13:17] people are responding. We're seeing so [13:19] many, especially young people like [13:21] Shelby, coming to faith in the Messiah. [13:23] We want to get this book out to you [13:25] absolutely free. They fought for [13:26] themselves. Uh 10 amazing testimonies of [13:29] Jewish people who have come to faith. [13:32] This will really encourage you uh so [13:34] much. Again, free. You can give us a [13:37] gift if you of any amount, but if you if [13:39] you don't have just we'll send it to you [13:41] as a gift. Uh you can log on to our [13:43] website. You can uh call our 800 number, [13:46] but we want to get this out to you. And [13:48] Shelby's closing message is that dogs [13:51] will be in heaven. So, [laughter] [13:53] she's got to research that, but she [13:55] believes that. So, if you're thinking [13:57] about that, uh, yeah, we we we agree [14:00] with that. Our best friends, right? Uh, [14:03] we're going to introduce to you when we [14:04] come back two young ladies who drew [14:08] closer to God through art of all things. [14:11] It's an absolutely amazing story from [14:13] Israel. Thank you so much for your [14:16] generosity. It means the world to the [14:19] people that we get to serve because of [14:21] your giving. You're changing lives and [14:24] introducing people to Yeshua as their [14:26] Messiah and seeing souls saved in Jewish [14:29] communities around the world. And we [14:31] couldn't do it without you. Now, I want [14:34] to take you to Israel to a place God is [14:36] healing people's hearts, interestingly [14:40] through art. Take a look. In a country [14:43] carrying generations of trauma, healing [14:46] doesn't always come in a hospital. [14:48] Sometimes it starts with [music] a blank [14:50] canvas. This is Betsel L, a faith-based [14:54] art center that is one of more than 90 [14:56] Jewish voice partner ministries [music] [14:58] in Israel. It's beautiful in here. [15:00] >> Yeah. [15:02] >> And so many different artists and styles [15:04] of art represented. Hila and Hen are [15:06] roommates and Messianic believers. Both [15:09] are teachers. [15:10] >> Wow. Hila is [music] also an IDF medic [15:14] with a combat unit. [15:15] >> So they called me the last two years [15:17] seven times to [music] come like to stop [15:19] my life, to stop teaching, to stop [15:22] everything that I'm doing and to go [15:24] [music] to the army. [15:26] >> Hila said expressing herself here has [15:28] helped her heal from the many things she [15:30] [music] experienced in her seven [15:32] deployments. [15:33] >> So this is some of your art. [15:34] >> Yeah, this is [music] [15:36] my process with the Lord. Um [15:40] that was the beginning one year ago. By [15:43] [music] his wounds we get healed from [15:46] Isaiah 53 verse [music] 5. [15:49] >> Yeah. [15:49] >> When you are just [15:52] splashing paint on something and [music] [15:55] you feel certain ways and you don't even [15:57] understand how you feel but you don't [15:58] have words to describe it. You're [16:00] letting [music] it out. [16:02] >> He used that art to heal us but like to [16:06] really heal. It's not like to go to the [16:08] doctor and he [music] give you a peel to [16:09] give you plaster. [16:11] >> It's really healing from inside to [16:13] outside. [16:15] >> What's your earliest piece here? [music] [16:16] >> My very first one is this one. [16:18] >> M [16:19] >> broken vessel. [16:20] >> The broken vessel. [16:21] >> Yeah. [music] [16:22] >> And this represents me uh when he found [16:26] me. [16:27] >> Yeah. [16:27] >> Broken, shattered. [music] [16:29] There's pieces that were not able to be [16:30] connected. bringing all my burdens to [16:33] [music] the Lord in a messy way without [16:36] care. [16:38] >> Um, and [music] so it had many [16:39] processes. I used bubbles. Uh, I used my [16:42] hands. I got dirty. [music] I was [16:44] splashing and stuff and it was [16:46] wonderful. And then the Lord just [16:48] finished it off with the cross. [16:50] >> And so it's [music] like he took it away [16:53] >> and and then it just makes everything [16:56] else not important. There's so much [16:58] intent [music] and meaning behind every [17:00] piece of art that you guys have shown [17:02] me. [17:03] >> Israel is a country that has gone [17:04] through much suffering. Every generation [17:07] since the beginning of Israel's [17:09] existence [music] has gone through [17:11] something hard. Whether it's the [17:12] Holocaust, a war, family loss, [17:17] um missiles, the 7th of October, we need [17:21] help. We need the Lord's help. It's [17:24] amazing this this place because if you [17:26] give God's place so he come. So I feel [17:30] this place this whole studio it's a [17:32] place that give God's place [laughter] [17:36] to treat people and to heal them through [17:38] the art. [17:39] >> Betel it's [music] under his wings. [17:44] >> How much safer can we be? This is what [17:47] he does. Receives us like this and [17:50] protects us and is our refuge and is [17:52] [music] a safe spot where we can be [17:55] humans. Young and old alike are drawn to [17:58] this center. From children to IDF [18:01] soldiers to Holocaust survivors. Some [18:04] believe in Yeshua. Others learn about [18:06] him while they create. And little by [18:08] little, the walls come down. Healing [18:11] isn't hurried here. He is also very [18:14] patient in [music] where we are at, you [18:16] know, cuz he could just be like healed, [18:18] but no, he's much deeper than that. He's [18:21] much more intimate than that. Um, so I [18:24] think that this was his way of showing [18:27] us how he loves us and [18:30] >> not only [music] that, giving us really [18:32] the deep healing that we needed so that [18:34] we could pass [music] it on. [18:36] >> Uh, [18:38] >> so I think that's what makes this place [18:40] special. I would have never created such [18:42] things [18:44] >> or expressed your heart in this kind of [18:46] way or known [music] your heart in this [18:48] kind of way. You said like every piece [18:49] of art you've created wasn't it was [18:52] intentional but it revealed something to [18:54] you about your own heart and your future [18:56] and your destiny [music] [18:58] >> and your relationship with Jesus. [19:00] >> Yeah. And it just strengthens the [19:02] identity of us in him. What a blessing [19:04] it is that God placed it in their heart [19:07] so that it can come into others.
