The Jewish community of Hebron has existed for approximately 3,000 years dating back to King David's rule. King Herod built a Jewish structure 2,000 years ago over the Jewish tombs, which UNESCO controversially designated as a Palestinian world heritage site. In 1267, the Mamluks constructed a mosque on top of the original Jewish building and expelled the Jewish community, who then waited 700 years to return and prayed outside their own building.
