Transcript [00:00] Over the past few days, there's been [00:01] this public dispute between Pope Leo and [00:06] President Trump over the ongoing war in [00:09] Iran. The controversy began [00:12] uh [00:13] just to make sure that you're up to [00:14] speed in case you've been living under a [00:16] rock and missed this one. On April 11th, [00:20] a few days ago, when Pope Leo delivered [00:21] a sermon [00:23] during a prayer vigil for peace at St. [00:26] Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. [00:29] And he spoke about the war and its moral [00:32] implications, kind of broadly. He warned [00:34] against what he called, quote, a [00:37] delusion of omnipotence driving global [00:40] con- global conflict, and he criticized [00:42] the use of religious language in [00:44] connection with the warfare. And the [00:46] Trump administration has used religious [00:48] language. Uh Trump has mocked Islam a [00:51] little bit saying, you know, you know, [00:53] all praise be to Allah when talking [00:54] about killing Iranian leaders. And um [00:58] um [01:00] And both Pete Hegseth and and Marco [01:03] Rubio referred to Easter and and when [01:06] they were talking about the rescue [01:07] operation. So, there has been some [01:09] mention of religious language. That [01:11] could be what he's referring to. [01:13] Uh and he's and the Pope Leo went on and [01:15] said that, quote, God does not bless any [01:18] conflict, which is an interesting thing [01:20] to say. Take a look at the Bible. Um [01:23] For example, in the song at the sea in [01:26] Exodus 15, where it says that the Lord [01:28] is a man of war, Adonai Ish Milchamah, [01:31] okay? Uh but yes, it says here that God [01:34] does not bless any conflict. That's what [01:35] Pope Pope Leo said, and he said that [01:37] invoking God to justify violence [01:41] distorts the role of religion. He also [01:43] emphasized the human cost of war, saying [01:46] that peace cannot be built on the [01:47] destruction of civilian life, including [01:49] hospitals and children. [01:52] As though that's what the Americans and [01:53] Israelis are doing, cuz it seems that he [01:56] was directing his comments at President [01:58] Trump. In addition to the sermon, the [01:59] Pope later addressed public rhetoric [02:03] about the war, including statements [02:05] suggesting the possible destruction of [02:07] Iran, referring to Trump's post about an [02:09] entire civilization being destroyed. [02:12] He's really talking about the Iranian [02:14] regime. [02:15] Anyway, the Pope then said that [02:17] threatening the elimination of an entire [02:19] civilization or entire population cannot [02:22] be morally justified. [02:24] And he's he basically said that the [02:26] whole that this whole thing is a [02:27] violation of basic moral principles. [02:29] Now, he didn't mention Trump by name in [02:31] the sermon, [02:32] but everyone understood them and [02:35] interpreted them as directed at at US [02:38] policy and being critical of US policy [02:40] and rhetoric um [02:43] surrounding this war. Now, President [02:45] Trump responded publicly [02:47] uh pretty quickly. He criticized the [02:48] Pope's comments. He described them as [02:50] weak. [02:52] And [02:53] uh and accused him [02:55] of being allied with his opponents. [02:57] Let's take a look at at what Trump had [02:59] to say. Here's Here's President Trump's [03:02] tweet, okay? His tweet is down here. [03:05] Uh Eric Eric Dowdy gave a gave a pretty [03:07] good um [03:09] summary of it. Pope Leo is weak on crime [03:12] and terrible on foreign policy. He talks [03:14] about fear of the Trump administration, [03:16] but doesn't mention the fear of the [03:17] Catholic Church and all the other [03:19] Christian organizations uh and and what [03:22] that that the Catholic Church and all [03:24] the other Christian organizations had [03:25] during COVID when they were arresting [03:26] priests, ministers, and everybody else [03:28] for holding church services, even when [03:30] going outside and being 10 and even 20 [03:33] ft apart. I don't want a Pope who thinks [03:34] it's terrible that America attacked [03:36] Venezuela, a country that was sending [03:38] massive amounts of drugs into the United [03:39] States and even worse, emptying their [03:41] prisons, including murderers, drug [03:43] dealers, and killers into our country. I [03:45] don't want a Pope who criticizes the [03:47] President of the United States because [03:48] I'm doing exactly what I was elected in [03:50] a landslide to do, setting record low [03:53] numbers in crime and creating the [03:54] greatest stock market in history. Leo [03:56] should be thankful because as everyone [03:58] knows, he was a shocking surprise. He [04:00] wasn't on any list to be Pope, and he [04:03] was only put there by the church because [04:04] he was an American and they thought they [04:06] would that would be the best way to deal [04:07] with with with President Trump. [04:10] If I wasn't in the White House, Leo [04:11] wouldn't be in the Vatican. [04:14] And then he he's um unfortunately, Leo's [04:16] weak on crime, weak on nuclear weapons, [04:18] does not sit well with me. [04:20] Nor does the fact that he meets with [04:21] Obama sympathizers like David Axelrod. [04:24] So, David Axelrod is a senior advisor to [04:25] Obama, and he had visited the Pope just [04:29] a few days before all of this happened. [04:32] Um so, there's a lot of suspicion that [04:34] this was all part of some sort of op uh [04:37] to try to [04:39] uh influence Trump or pull Catholics [04:42] away from President Trump, which is [04:44] already somewhat happening. We'll talk [04:45] about that in a bit. Later on in the [04:47] video, we'll we'll address that and [04:49] we'll talk about what how the Iranians [04:50] are talking about this. [04:52] Um [04:54] And then it says, Leo should get his act [04:55] together as Pope, use common sense, stop [04:57] catering to the radical left, and focus [04:59] on being a great Pope, not a politician. [05:01] It's hurting him very badly, and more [05:03] importantly, it's hurting the Catholic [05:05] Church. [05:06] Uh Pope Leo Here's also a little clip of [05:08] Leo. [05:09] Uh this isn't from the prayer vigil, but [05:11] this is something he said as well. Let's [05:13] take a look at at Leo addressing all of [05:15] this. [05:17] Since I don't mind in English, [05:20] I I would simply say um [05:22] once again, what I said in the would be [05:25] would be message on Sunday, [05:27] asking all people of goodwill to search [05:31] always for peace and not violence, to [05:33] reject war, especially a war which many [05:38] people have said is an unjust war, which [05:42] uh is continuing to escalate, and uh [05:45] which is not resolving anything. In [05:48] fact, we have a worldwide economic [05:51] crisis, energy crisis, uh situation in [05:55] the Middle East of great instability, [05:57] and which is only provoking more hatred [05:59] throughout the world. So, come back to [06:01] the table. Let's talk. Let's look for [06:03] solutions in a peaceful way. And let's [06:06] remember especially the innocent [06:08] children, [06:10] the elderly, [06:11] sick, so many people who have already [06:14] become or will become victims of this uh [06:17] continued warfare. And to remind all [06:20] that uh attacks on the civilian [06:23] infrastructure is against international [06:25] law, but that it is also a sign of uh [06:30] the hatred, the division, the [06:31] destruction [06:33] that human beings capable of. And we all [06:35] want to work for peace. People want [06:38] peace. I would invite the citizens of [06:41] all the countries involved to contact [06:43] the authorities, political leaders, [06:45] congressmen to uh [06:48] ask them, tell them to work for peace [06:50] and to reject war. [06:53] Okay, so here he's actively he's openly [06:56] coming out against the war. He's calling [06:57] it unjust. Now, let's be very clear. He [07:00] said nothing about the slaughter by the [07:03] Iranians of their civilians. He has he [07:06] never speaks up on behalf of persecuted [07:09] Christians across Muslim nations in the [07:11] Middle East. So, let's take all of this [07:14] with that context in mind as well. [07:16] Here's President Trump from yesterday [07:18] responding. Why did you attack Pope Leo [07:21] on social? [07:23] Uh [07:24] I don't think he's doing a very good [07:25] job. He likes crime, I guess. He [07:29] He had a Think of it. [07:31] He's worried about fear. What about the [07:33] fear when [07:35] the ministers and the priests and the [07:39] all of those great people that were [07:40] arrested during COVID, and in many [07:43] cases, they're outside 10 ft apart, and [07:46] they were arrested. We don't like a Pope [07:49] that's going to say that it's okay to [07:51] have a nuclear weapon. We don't want a [07:53] Pope that says crime is okay in our [07:55] cities. I don't like it. I'm not a big [07:57] fan of Pope Leo. He's a very liberal [08:00] person, and he's a man that doesn't [08:03] believe in stopping crime. He's a man [08:05] that doesn't think that we should be [08:09] toying with a country that wants a [08:11] nuclear weapon so they can blow up the [08:13] world. I'm not I'm not a fan of Pope [08:16] Leo. [08:19] All right, that's Trump basically saying [08:21] the same things that he said in the [08:23] tweet. Now, I saw this great clip from [08:26] Bill O'Reilly responding to this whole [08:28] thing, and he says what I would want to [08:30] say better than I could say it. So, [08:32] let's go to him. I could mediate [08:35] a settlement between the Pope and Donald [08:37] Trump. I could do it. [08:39] But in such a mediation, [08:42] I would have to ask his Holiness, very [08:45] frankly, [08:47] you have 30,000 people gunned down in [08:49] Iran just a few weeks ago. We heard [08:53] nothing from the Vatican on that at all. [08:56] Nothing. [08:57] You have a [09:00] terror government close to nuclear [09:03] weapon. Is it acceptable [09:06] for the Catholic Church [09:08] to look away from that? As you know, I [09:11] wrote Confronting Evil, and the theme of [09:13] the book is that these heinous [09:15] individuals um they gain power by people [09:19] looking away. [09:21] By people not wanting to pay the price, [09:23] as you put it, for gasoline or food. [09:26] That's how they get power. Mhm. Now, the [09:29] Catholic Church has not defined, you [09:31] know, how would you think that Pope Leo [09:33] would answer that question? Very simple [09:34] question. [09:35] Is the Catholic Church okay [09:38] with the mullahs having a nuclear [09:39] weapon? Your Holiness, yes or no? I'm a [09:43] simple man. It's a simple question. I'm [09:46] a Catholic. I'd like to know the answer. [09:48] The Pope will never address that. [09:51] And that frustrates [09:54] Donald Trump, because the Pope is also [09:56] an open border guy. There's [10:26] also a 60 minutes a 60 minutes episode [10:29] that was just released with some [10:30] Catholic Cardinals who were with Axelrod [10:34] who were criticizing Trump. It seems [10:36] that there might be some kind of op [10:38] being run to try to pull traditional [10:41] Catholics to try to pull Catholics away [10:44] from President Trump and that has [10:46] everything to do with how Iran [10:49] in their state media and in their [10:50] official statements is dealing with this [10:53] situation. That might seem out of left [10:54] field. What does that have to do with [10:56] the the spat between the Pope and Trump? [11:00] But take a look. [11:01] Tasnim Iran [11:03] Iran regime media. [11:06] Iran condemns [11:08] Trump's insult to Pope. [11:11] Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian [11:14] slammed his US counterpart for [11:16] criticizing Pope Leo. His Holiness Pope [11:18] Leo the 14th, I condemn the insult to [11:20] your Excellency on behalf of the great [11:22] nation of Iran and declare that the [11:24] declaration of Jesus the prophet of [11:26] peace and brotherhood is not acceptable [11:29] to any free person. I wish your glory I [11:31] wish you glory by Allah. Pezeshkian [11:33] wrote on a post on his X account on [11:35] Monday. His comments came after US [11:38] President Donald Trump slammed Pope Leo [11:40] as weak and posted a picture of himself [11:42] as Jesus healing the sick. Trump's [11:44] insult came after Leo suggested over the [11:46] weekend that a delusion of omnipotence [11:48] is fueling the US Israeli war on Iran. [11:51] Pope Leo was and then he and then he [11:52] quotes Trump's tweet saying that Pope [11:55] Leo was weak. Italian politicians across [11:58] the spectrum across the spectrum showed [12:00] their solidarity with Leo. Premier [12:03] Georgia Meloni sent a message of support [12:05] for his peace mission while the leader [12:07] of the main opposition party Ellie [12:09] Schlein was more direct calling Trump's [12:11] attacks extremely serious. [12:14] And there's the picture of Trump. Later [12:16] Trump posted a picture suggesting he had [12:18] saint-like powers akin to those of Jesus [12:20] Christ [12:21] wearing a biblical style robe. Trump is [12:25] seen laying hands on bed on a bedridden [12:27] man as light emanates from his fingers [12:29] while a soldier, a nurse, a praying [12:31] woman, and a bearded man in a baseball [12:33] cap all look on [12:36] and admiringly. The sky is filled above [12:40] is filled with eagles and American flag [12:42] and vaporous images. Okay. [12:46] So you have the president of Iran [12:50] condemning Trump for insulting the Pope. [12:54] And we also and that comes on the heels [12:56] of this. This story caught my eye at the [12:58] time and I didn't do anything about it [13:00] because I wasn't sure what to say. [13:03] It was kind of an isolation and this was [13:04] from just a day earlier. [13:07] Look at this. [13:08] This is from RT which is Russian state [13:10] media. Putin Pezeshkian call. Iran's [13:13] President congratulates Orthodox [13:15] Christians on Easter holiday. Leaders [13:18] discussed results of Iran US talks in [13:21] Islamabad. Okay, so you have that. So [13:24] he's he's congratulating Orthodox [13:26] Christians. He's condemning Trump for [13:28] criticizing the Pope. But then they [13:31] doubled down on this and in today's [13:34] Tasnim in Tasnim's media today they [13:38] follow up the story of of Pezeshkian [13:41] criticize or condemning Trump [13:44] with this headline. World users praise [13:47] Iranian President's defense of Pope as [13:51] symbol of cross faith respect. Hmm. [13:55] Check this one out. Iranian President [13:57] Masoud Pezeshkian has won widespread [14:00] acclaim from social media users around [14:02] the world for publicly condemning US [14:05] President Donald Trump's criticism of [14:06] Pope Leo the 14th. The gesture came on [14:09] Monday through an English language post [14:11] on X shortly after Trump's attack on [14:13] Truth Social. [14:15] He attacked [14:17] he [14:18] he acted on behalf of the Iranian people [14:19] to defend the pontiff and affirm [14:21] reverence for Jesus as a prophet of [14:23] peace. Separately the controversy [15:38] began with Trump's sharp criticism of [15:41] the Pope over his anti-war position. [15:42] Trump also questioned the circumstances [15:45] of Pope Leo the 14th's election. The [15:47] pontiff had earlier voiced opposition to [15:50] war including in contexts involving [15:52] Iran. [15:54] Pezeshkian's timely statement marked an [15:56] alignment from Tehran in support of the [15:58] Catholic leader. [16:00] And then again it states that users [16:02] worldwide [16:04] shared [16:06] Pezeshkian's post. [16:09] And [16:10] meanwhile the episode has been viewed by [16:12] some as entry into a new period of [16:14] history and a new world order. The [16:16] global acclaim for Pezeshkian's defense [16:19] of the Pope ultimately traces back to [16:21] core Islamic principles enshrined in the [16:24] Quran which Iranians uphold devoutly. [16:27] Holy Mary was known as Maryam was also [16:31] known as Maryam holds a singularly [16:32] exalted place [16:34] as the only woman directly named in the [16:37] Quran. An entire chapter Surah Maryam is [16:41] dedicated to her story and she's [16:42] described as chosen and purified above [16:45] all above the women of all nations. [16:48] Jesus referred to as Isa is revered in [16:50] the Quran as a major prophet, a servant [16:53] of God, and a messenger of peace. These [16:55] teachings emphasize Mary Mary's purity [16:58] and Jesus honored status without [17:01] attributing divinity to divinity to him [17:04] yet affirm both as profound signs for [17:06] humanity. Such scriptural foundations [17:09] explain why Iranians naturally extend [17:11] respect to Christian figures and why [17:14] Pezeshkian's defense resonated so [17:16] strongly on the world stage. Okay, so [17:20] you see that. [17:22] I love that line where it [17:24] points out that they don't attribute [17:26] divinity because they of course have [17:28] many Muslim readers who are like, "Whoa, [17:30] whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. What are you [17:31] saying here? Are we talking too nicely [17:33] about Christianity?" And doesn't it So [17:36] they're saying, "No, no, no, no. We [17:37] don't view him as as divine but they [17:39] view him as a prophet and as a prophet [17:41] of peace [17:42] Jesus that that is." [17:46] So here you have but you have two [17:47] stories on this. You have the story of [17:50] the criticism itself of Trump and then [17:52] you have a story about how well received [17:54] this criticism is by Catholic users [17:57] around the world by Christians around [17:58] the world. [19:45] So let's [19:48] talk about Christianity in in Iran. [19:51] Okay? [19:56] If you're if [19:58] this thing is absurd. [20:00] Just to understand how absurd this is. [20:02] There is an organization called Open [20:04] Doors, okay? Open Doors is a Christian [20:06] organization. [20:08] And they [20:11] they monitor [20:13] the persecution of Christians all over [20:15] the world, okay? They publish something [20:18] called the World Watch List. It comes [20:19] out every year. The World Watch List of [20:22] 2026, here it is up on this website. You [20:24] can go to opendoors.org. Again, it's a [20:26] Christian organization. And it says the [20:28] World Watch List is Open Doors annual [20:30] ranking of the 50 countries where [20:32] Christians face the most extreme [20:34] persecution. [20:36] Okay? And then they have profiles of [20:37] each of the countries. Here's the 50 [20:39] countries that persecute Christians the [20:40] worst. And it's different color-coded [20:43] for the severity of the persecution. [20:45] Uh the worst country in the world, [20:48] the number one worst worst place to be a [20:50] Christian is North Korea, and it's there [20:52] pretty much every year. If you're found [20:54] out to be a Christian in North Korea, [20:56] you're immediately imprisoned or [20:58] probably killed. Very often they're just [21:00] executed. [21:02] Uh it is the absolute worst place to be [21:03] a Christian in the world. That's North [21:04] Korea. [21:05] Now, in the top 10, which are all [21:07] countries that are are color-coded in [21:09] the dark red severe persecution, [21:13] are Somalia [21:16] at number two, Yemen, Sudan, Eritrea, [21:19] Syria Nigeria Pakistan Libya Iran. [21:22] In all of those countries, [21:25] the reason that Christians are [21:26] persecuted is that they're being [21:27] persecuted by Muslims. And notice that [21:29] Iran is the 10th worst place in the [21:32] world to be a Christian. The 10th worst [21:36] place on the world to be a Christian. [21:38] According to this World Watch List, [21:39] according to the report on Iran, [21:41] converts from Islam to Christianity in [21:43] Iran face the harshest religious freedom [21:47] violations. That's what they're held in [21:49] violation of. The worst persecution [21:53] is not directed at historic Christian [21:55] minorities, but at Muslims who choose to [21:58] become Christians. In Iran, if you're [22:00] born a Muslim, then that is legally a [22:03] permanent status. As the report puts it, [22:06] quote, "Ethnic Persians are [22:08] automatically considered Muslim, making [22:10] converts to Christianity apostates [22:14] under Islamic law. So, conversion is not [22:17] treated as a personal religious [22:19] decision. It's treated as as a crime and [22:23] also as a political threat. That's why [22:25] in the regime's own framing, [22:27] conversions are viewed as a Western [22:29] threat to undermine the Islamic [22:31] Republic. That's how they're understood [22:33] there. Christians, especially converts, [22:35] are routinely arrested and interrogated [22:37] and sentenced not for violence. They're [22:40] not sentenced cuz they did something [22:41] wrong, [22:42] but for meeting together. Okay? For [22:44] practicing their faith. They'll get [22:46] arrested and interrogated. And as the [22:49] report the Open Doors report states, [22:51] quote, "They face arrests, prosecutions, [22:53] and lengthy sentences typically on [22:56] charges of national security [22:58] violations." Okay? So, if you if you're [23:01] a Christian, you're considered a [23:02] national security threat in Iran. There [23:05] are cases where people are literally [23:07] prosecuted because they owned a Bible [23:10] in Persian. [23:12] Now, after the war after the June 2025 [23:14] war, the 12-day war, [23:16] um this escalated even further. The [23:19] authorities began Again, this is their [23:20] language openly accusing converts of [23:23] aiding Israel. [23:25] Okay, now think about that. You become a [23:27] Christian [23:28] and the government labels you a foreign [23:30] agent for becoming Christian. You're [23:32] treated as a spy. At least 50 Christians [23:35] were detained in the immediate crackdown [23:37] after that war. And this is happening [23:40] uh in a place where as the report [23:41] describes it, quote, "Thousands of [23:44] Christian as the Open Doors report [23:45] describes it, thousands of Christian [23:47] converts meet secretly. [23:49] They're constantly threatened by [23:51] security services that closely monitor [23:53] their activities." So, the Christian [23:56] religion has to be underground in in [23:59] Iran. There's a criminalization of their [24:01] faith. [24:03] Now, there's another layer to the way [24:05] to the way the Iranian regime plays [24:07] this. They they point they always point [24:10] to these recognized Christian [24:11] minorities, and they even have a few [24:12] seats in Parliament that are reserved [24:14] for them. And they say, "Look, we have [24:16] religious freedom. We have Christians." [24:17] Like it's it's like 1% of the [24:19] population, by the way. [24:21] Um but even that is [24:24] that's direct [24:26] that's directly addressed in the Open [24:27] Doors report. [24:46] So, when when you have Masoud [24:47] Pezeshkian, the president of Iran, [24:50] who's now coming out he's posturing as a [24:52] defender of the Pope, just remember that [24:55] this is a regime that treats [24:56] Christianity, especially if someone [24:58] chooses Christianity, as a national [25:00] security threat. They arrest Christian [25:02] believers. They monitor churches [25:04] closely. Uh surveil them. They prosecute [25:07] people for owning a Bible. [25:28] So, [25:30] right now in America, [25:32] the there is a [25:35] very vocal [25:37] and sizable [25:38] wing of the Republican Party [25:42] that is very anti-Israel and is very [25:44] anti-this war [25:46] and is dominated by traditional Catholic [25:50] voices. [25:51] Traditional Catholics, [25:53] including people like Candace Owens [25:56] and Tucker Carlson, who's has never said [25:58] that he's Catholic, but he's he has a [26:00] great affinity for Catholicism, and he [26:01] has said that many times. A lot of his [26:03] followers are traditional Catholics. [26:06] And uh and you and you have [26:09] and you have others, Megyn Kelly. They [26:12] represent this this in this in this [26:14] growing more I what we call them [26:16] isolationists or anti-Israel wing of [26:19] MAGA, it's dominated by a lot of [26:23] traditional Catholics, okay? And I think [26:26] that's what's happening here. So, I [26:28] think that these anti-Trump [26:30] or and anti-Israel forces, [26:33] and this is this gets back to the [26:34] Axelrod meeting, decided to meet with [26:37] the Pope and [26:39] and and try to drive a wedge a further [26:42] wedge between Trump and Catholicism [26:46] to make it less palatable to be [26:49] supportive of Trump if you're a [26:51] Catholic. [26:52] To give a back to give a backing to [26:55] those anti-Trump they've now become [26:58] anti-Trump these anti-Trump anti-Iran [27:01] war voices who again are dominated by [27:04] Catholic voices. And that's why I think [27:05] they're they're that Pope Leo is [27:08] participating in what basically is an [27:11] op. That's what I think is going on [27:12] here. But again, the absurdity of the [27:14] Iranian regime criticizing Trump for [27:17] criticizing the Pope when they [27:19] criminalize Christianity is just beyond. [27:21] It's crazy.
