Description (by owner on YouTube)
The Druze are a small, monotheistic religious and ethnic group primarily found in the Levant, particularly in Lebanon, Syria, Israel, and Jordan. They trace their religious origins to the 11th century in Egypt during the reign of the Fatimid caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah. The Druze faith incorporates elements of Islam, Gnosticism, Neoplatonism, Pythagoreanism, and other philosophical and spiritual traditions.
Core Beliefs
- Monotheism – The Druze believe in one God.
- Reincarnation – They believe that the soul is eternal and undergoes reincarnation after death.
- Esotericism – Their teachings are secretive and known only to the religious elite, called ʿuqqāl (the "wise").
- Al-Hakim as a central figure – Al-Hakim is seen as a divine figure whose disappearance is viewed as a form of occultation (similar to the Shia Mahdi concept).
- Separation from other faiths – The Druze faith is closed to converts, and marriage outside the faith is discouraged.
Sacred Texts
- Their religious scriptures are called the Epistles of Wisdom (Rasa'il al-Hikma).
- Religious knowledge is divided between the initiated (ʿuqqāl) and the uninitiated (juhhāl).
Identity and Practices
The Druze do not observe the Five Pillars of Islam (like prayer and fasting) in the same way as Muslims.
They have their own distinctive symbols, including the five-colored star, representing the five cosmic principles:
Green – Mind (ʿAql)
Red – Soul (Nafs)
Yellow – Word (Kalima)
Blue – Precedent (Sabq)
White – Immanence (Tali)
Political and Social Role
The Druze have maintained a strong sense of community and political influence:
In Lebanon, they have been historically influential in politics and military conflicts.
In Israel, Druze men serve in the Israeli military.
In Syria, Druze communities have maintained a degree of autonomy and have played complex roles in the country’s civil war.
